Principles of modern warfare

In 2010, Bradley Manning transmitted the video „Collateral Murder“ to WikiLeaks.  Two of the US-soldiers who participated in the notorious airstrike of July 2007, have now written an open letter to the iraqi people asking for forgiveness.

What they describe sounds not like this was an isolated incident but rather normal and systematically trained military procedure (mov1, mov2, mov3, mov4). By saying this I don’t only refer to the ethics of the so-called US Rules of Engagement but also to the coldhearted phrases in the WikiLeaks-video, which have an alarming resemblance to the dialogues in videogames like „CoD – Modern warfare“ (picture below). Thats also part of the psychological preparations for war. New recruits, soldiers and the civil society are undergoing many small steps of familiarizing with the brutal ideas of war and terror. Wikileaks: „Goal of releasing video of Baghdad attack is to illuminate culture of modern air warfare, and question it.“

Lets hear now what the veterans have to say:

We have been speaking to whoever will listen, telling them that what was shown in the Wikileaks video only begins to depict the suffering we have created. From our own experiences, and the experiences of other veterans we have talked to, we know that the acts depicted in this video are everyday occurrences of this war: this is the nature of how U.S.-led wars are carried out in this region.

We acknowledge our part in the deaths and injuries of your loved ones as we tell Americans what we were trained to do and what we carried out in the name of “god and country”.  The soldier in the video said that your husband shouldn’t have brought your children to battle, but we are acknowledging our responsibility for bringing the battle to your neighborhood, and to your family.  We did unto you what we would not want done to us.

Aber warum zum Teufel werden unbewaffnete Helfer beschossen? Diese haben doch keine Gefahr für die US-Soldaten dargestellt. In der langen unbearbeiteten Version des Videos gibt es ja noch den Beschuss eines Gebäudes mit drei Hellfire-Raketen. Auch hier gibt es die größten Zivilverluste, als nach dem Einschlag der ersten Rakete die Menschen zur Hilfe eilen und dann Opfer der nächsten Rakete  werden.

Worüber rede ich hier eigentlich?

Dieser Irakkrieg basiert auf der Lüge über Massenvernichtungswaffen, die es nie gab! Eine Regierung die ihr Volk einmal ungestraft belügt, wird wieder lügen. So wie bei diesem einen kleinen Videoauschnitt auch. Warum reden wir über Details? Wieso verlangen wir nicht ein Ende des Krieges? Statt Hass, Tod und Elend in andere Länder zu exportieren, könnte man versuchen über den Anreiz der Wirtschaft und gemeinsame Zusammenarbeit an Stabilität arbeiten. Wohin ist die “Nie wieder Krieg!” Mentalität nach den Weltkriegen verschwunden?
